A Military Odyssey 2006

My introduction to these Short Photo Essay pages started with a statement that I would add a selection of my favourite photos without breaking them down into groups of either subject or group however on first page I have broken that ‘rule!’. I found sufficient images that just for Short page it is convenient to split the photos.

Around the Camps

One of my favourite days at Military odyssey is the time when I just wander around camera at the ready to snap whatever might come my way. In this case I was pleased to get action shots, such as the firing of the German anti-tank, as well as some great portrait shots.

Medieval

Not seen so often are medieval re-enactment groups, in this case representing, I believe, Christian knights against Saracen warriors. Getting gun flashes / blasts is always excellent, but capturing arrows and spears in flight and the clash of sword and axe on shield is at least as satisfying and requires a slight different technique to get the best.

The Napoleonic Period

The Die Hards

Ok, i admit that while I admire all of the re-enactment groups I do have a slight bias toward the Die Hards, now a part of the Victorian Society. Undoubtedly the bias stems from my first viewing of the film Zulu as a young man at school, lots of reading of the period (including a visit to the battlefields) and perhaps even the colourful uniforms.

The images below are of the Die Hards recreating the opening engagement of the First Boer War or Transvaal rebellion depending on your point of view, generally referred to as the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit. The re-enactment begins with Boojers declaring their independence and telling the British column not to proceed to Pretoria.
